No kid will ever admit that not being able to take an iPod to school will not cause them to keel over dead on the spot, but before iPods existed kids found ways to entertain themselves on the bus, even if it involved talking to the kids around them. It's hard to argue that they shouldn't be allowed in school at all, if the kids have access to school lockers where they can stash them during the day, but they in no way should be present in the classrooms without explicit permission from the teachers involved. That's the way it worked for us with portable cassette and CD players. If kids have a problem leaving them in the lockers, confiscate them until their parent(s) can come retrieve them. Just make sure they can be securely stored somewhere where they'll be protected from theft, like a safe in the principal's office or something.

Cel phones are a bit different. They shouldn't be allowed in class (there have been enough instances where kids have been caught cheating on tests with text-messaging to prove that), but they shouldn't be banned from schools either. Parents should be calling in through the front office for emergencies (they'll need to call them anyways if it involves getting the child out of school, so...), but if they just have a quick message to pass on, like how they'll be a few minutes late to pick them up, or they need them to run a quick errand on the way home, it's a useful way of getting in touch that doesn't inconvenience the school staff or embarrass the child. More importantly, it gives the kids a way to contact their parents or some other authority in an emergency, or even just to update the parents on after-school plans, and it doesn't make them rely on being able to find a payphone and have the correct change to place a call (I know the latter part was a problem for me on a few of the occassions when I needed to make a call home before leaving school).

There isn't an educational use for an ipod in school. It is simply a distraction.
Cell phones should be turned OFF while in class. A parent can call the office (and they will interupt the class) if they need to reach their child during an emergency. Students can check for messages in between classes or at lunch.

I am sure it is the exact opposite of what nearly every student wants to hear, but you asked.

it depends on what grade you are in. if you are in 6th and up it's okay to bring a cell phone. i leave my cell phone in my bookbag to tell my mom where i am going to practice or somthing like that. but NEVER bring your ipod to school because my buddys got stolen because he left it in his jym bag and never seen it again therefore i never bring my ipod to school. it would also be a good idea if you ask the teacher if you can leave your cell phone under her desk so for sure it won't get stolen. remember to turn off cell phone or it will disrupt classes!

No to iPods (kids rip them off); yes to cell phones but they should be on vibrate so not to disrupt classes; and not be permitted during exams.
