What you are smelling is ammonia. It's normal for a new tank to have lots of ammonia in it, but rarely so much that you can smell it. Instead of completely cleaning it, do large water changnes instead. A 50% water change should correct the oder problem and lower the ammonia to a point the fish will be ok. Your tank is new and therefore isn't cycled yet. This is something pet shops all too often fail to explain to new customers. It doesn't last forever, but certain things need to happen in the tank for it to become stable and clean. Here's a link that will help you understand what's going on in your tank, how to make the process work and details on what will go on next. Hope this helps

Do you have fish? Fish give off ammonia, which can smell like cat pee. You need a better filter, or water purifier drops. It will help keep the tank clean between cleanings.

It's a build up of ammonia, would you believe.

It can happen when you change too much water in your aquarium. Basically, within fish tanks there are bacteria (beneficial ones), that convert fish waste to nitrites and eventually nitrates. You obviously need to change the water to keep it from going toxic, but if you over do it, it actually kills off the beneficial bacteria which results in a sudden surge in ammonia levels...

you're tank smells like that because of your ammonia in it . if you want to fix it then go to you're aquarium shop and ask them for some prime to put in you're tank. i had the same thing in my tank so i took some water in so they could test it and that's what mine was. i used this prime for 4 days and i got ride of it with prime.
