Why do liberals hate freedom?

Wait a minute, that makes no sense. Isn't the whole point of being a liberal is you pursue the dream of liberty? In that case, liberty must hate liberty.

Do you mean American liberty? That's not the same as European liberty, which created the idea in the first place - and people in Europe have the liberty to housing, food, employment, clean water, proper education, as well as the liberty to speak what they feel. And God knows they do, but aren't they lambasted for doing so.

So why do people say Liberals hate freedom? When that is clearly what they are fighting for?

I think this says it better than I can. Liberals should be lauded not hated in this society, because pretty much anything good in the US came from a liberal.

A Day in the Life of Joe Republican

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some liberal environmentalist fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electricity until some liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

Noam, you know as well as I that some folks just find it much easier to paint everything with a large brush (left & right, Democrat & Republican, liberal and conservative).

Life is just SO much easier when YOU'RE completely right and the only other viable party is totally wrong.

Forget the fact that you all share so much in common, such as major domestic issues.

Thank God (or whoever you like) that Yahoo Answers is not totally indicative of the American public. I would prefer to believe that most people have a more open mind; that they are more disposed to compromise. Otherwise, we aint gonna get $hit done as country.

Make no mistake about it, Noam, liberals/Democrats are very much for freedom - freedom of choice.

I can't speak for the next guy; we're all a little different, but for me, some of the essential freedoms are:

- literary freedom; the right to publish or read any kind of book we want (ok, with the exception of child porn). It is not for any religious group or religiously motivated politician to tell us what we should or shouldn't read, view, hear, etc.

- sexual freedom, and I say that as hetero who's been happily married for 36 yrs. What the hell should I care about any peaceful couple living next door? Hey, if they're obeying all the city ordinances, and their place doesn't look like a slum, and the cops aren't paying them a visit once a week, what the hell business is it of mine who or what gender they are? It doesn't affect my relationship one bit.

- Relgion? I don't care what religion you are; as a country we embrace ALL religions, and nowhere do I see where Protestantism was designated as the "state religion." All I ask is that you don't get up in my face about it. You want to pray - go ahead and pray. I don't need to participate in your "reindeer games" publicly.

- 2nd amendment? Hey...you go and buy as big a piece of ordnance as you can fit through the front door, Sparky. You start doing target practice before 9 AM on a Sunday morning, and I'm gonna send Joe Peschi over with a baseball bat.

Yes, liberals love freedom, no matter what some pinheads here might suggest.

This is hardly a college forum, anyway; it's more like a flame-war room for wisea$$es with nothing better to do, who wouldn't have the cajones to say such things to you face-to-face.

Not one conserative has given a real answer with some factual support. Their answers have no depth beyond mindless stereotypes and name calling. Liberals have fought to maintain our civil rights that have been compromised in the Patriot Act. There is an example of how liberals love freedom. "Because their communists, or "don't have the guts to fight for freedom" are not answers to the question. They're answers that show they are as ignorant as the person that wrote the question. .

They want to take all Our earned money, and spend it on what they want, unless you are one of the Chosen Elite.
They want to take our cars away, and make Us walk, or ride a bike, 30 miles or more to and from work.
But they will continue to use their Airplanes, and Expensive Cars.
They want Us to live in the dark of night, while they have lights on in every room, and all around their mansions.
They want to take Our Freedom of Religion away, unless, of course, it is the Isalamic Religion.
They want to destroy Our Military, and depend on the Crooked United Nations to protect Us.
They call our Military Protectors killers of Men, Women and Children.
They call them Nazis!

Remember before the last elections when the Dems stated that they will never remove the funds necessary to safeguard our Military, and allow them to do the Job the Dems, and the Republicians all voted to send them to do in Iraq?
Well, only 3 to 4 months later, the Democrats are threatening to withdraw all funding for Our Military that THEY, THE DEMS,
Put in Harms way.
They are on a 14 day vacation at this moment, and the funds to support OUR TROOPS runs out in 15 DAYS.

The modern meaning of "liberal" is not the same as the historical meaning.

A modern day liberal in the United States is someone who thinks that government knows better how to allocate resources (ie, tax revenue) than the individual does.

Liberals like the government controlling education, healthcare, etc. Liberals are for socialism and economic equality (ie, take from those that produce and give to those that do not).

Liberals simply see the world in a different sphere than that of our Founding Fathers.

Liberals will destroy everything in the name of equality and diversity (and of course, their meaning of diversity is only skin color and not diversity of thought).

Classic liberals love freedom and embrace it (including economic freedom).

Modern day liberals will yield freedom for equality and especially despise economic freedom.

It appears that the propaganda is aimed at the various degrees of intelligence and education of the listeners...the most simple, illogical, blanket statements, totally without merit are aimed at the most stubborn...then William Krystol speaks to the rest in his oily, self-serving, make believe way to the rest...fooling them by sitting there in his nice suit as he makes policy for the President...He is a propagandist....Intelligent people who want to believe the simpler versions, listen to him to develop a strategy for their own selfish uses.
