A heavy discharge is not related to a heavy period. Your discharge is called "cervical mucus" and is secreted by the cervix to help sperm reach the egg during intercourse. When the discharge is crystal clear and very stretchy (ie: you can stretch it between your thumb and index finger more than one inch) you are at your most fertile time of the month.

Your period, on the other hand, is the discharge of blood lining your uterine wall that occurs when you are not impregnated. While the uterine blood and the cervical mucus are important for child conception, they are not related in terms of heaviness of one another.

I also do not recommend taking the birth control pill for long periods of time due to the unnatural amounts of hormones it contains. It often leads to long term side effects such as migraine headaches, ADHD type symptoms, and mood swings.

Good luck!

A heavy discharge usually means you are at the time of the month when you are most fertile (the time you are most likely to get pregnant). I don't think it is linked to your period. If you want lighter periods you need to see a doctor.

If you have allot of discharge this could be a sign of a yeast infection. It does not mean you will have a heavy period. There is nothing you can do to have a light period. Besides go the Dr to see about birth control sometimes it helps slow down your periods.

The amount of discharge has no bearing on how heavy your period is. I don't get discharge anymore and my periods are heavy.

The only way to make your periods lighter is to be on birth control pills for over a year. NOTHING else will do it.

Most women are genetically prone to having heavy periods. If your mother's were heavy, so will yours.

Alot of discharge can mean that your period is coming but no, it doesn't have an effect on the period unless an infection is coming on.

I would recommend checking with your dr about this to be on the safe side.

As for making the period lighter I found that increasing the level of my iron during that time by eating things such as spinach, raisins, and peanut butter (if not allergic to peanuts of course) can help slow the amount of the flow down and also found that it helped to ease my cramping.
