I'm traveling to Monterey Bay, and I'd really like to take PCH for the scenic value but am not sure where to get on it from Santa Rosa CA. I'd prefer not to have to go into S.F. if at all possible... Can ANYONE help?!?!?!?!

So since several people have complained about my use of the term PCH, I'm sorry, but yes, I did live in So Cal before, and what does it matter what it's called anyway, as long as you know what I'm talking about? A rose called by any other name smells just as sweet; a highway by any other name is still the same.

You will have to enter part of San Francisco, but it will be on the beach and it is beautiful.

From Santa Rosa, you can take River Road out to US 1.
It winds around Bodega Bay, Stinson Beach (and just reopened after a slide) and then go can take it right through small town of Mill Valley, get on 101 through Sausalito and hit the Golden Gate Bridge. Then, take the first exit (25th Avenue) and follow the signs to the Great HIghway. You'll go along Ocean Beach and keep following US 1 until you get to Monterey. It may take you 3 hours plus.
P.S. It is not called the Pacific Coast Highway in Northern California.

totally agree with lost my mind's post above. if you want to avoid SF you would actually need to get off highway 1 and somehow get over to highway 80, which is a completely round about way and would add unecessary time. depending on the time of day you go, SF is not too horrible traffic wise. Just try to avoid the area during rush hour commute times.

Only So Cal people refer to highway 1 as the PCH. We all just call it highway 1 up here. As far as I am concerned, once you leave Oxnard in ventura county, it is no longer called the PCH.

The only feasible way to not go through SF is to take 101 south to 156, which will go to Monterey. Unfortunately if you want to take highway 1, you will need to either go through SF, or loop around the bay to some highway like 92 which will go to 1.

you have to go through the city, as it touchs the ocean

since its more direct to take 101 to the city since 1 joins it anyway, just take 101 south to the city and then take the great highway (highway 1) south to monterey
