I have been 14 since January and i am really wanting to have a job this summer. I am going to be completly bored and want to know if any stores or buisinesses hire at age 14. I live in South Carolina. And I am really good with computers and technology, so i was thinking about Best Buy, Comp USA etc. But i think they don't hire until 16+. I definatly do not want to work in fast food.

Thank You

Most places will hire you, though you'll need to get a legal form for your parents or guardians to sign saying that you are allowed to work. In my state, you have to get that form from your school. Check with you school and find out, they may also be able to offer good suggestions on places for you to apply.

There are many jobs available to a person who is 14- they may not be what you are looking for.

You could always mow lawns in the summer. Now is the time to start advertising for that. You may have to start before the summer, by mowing lawns on the weekends. You can print flyers on your computer and have your parents help you deliver them in the neighborhood.

You may also talk to people you know who have their own businesses ask them if they have any odd jobs that you can do, or you come up with a job and present it to them. These can be anything from helping with child care to cleaning the offices to delivering advertising materiels, or running errands.

The problem that you will run into is that labor laws prohibit businesses from hiring people under the age of 16. They want to be sure that our children are not being forced to work long hours and being deprived of schooling and childhood.

If you talk to the people you know (this is called networking) then they may be able to come up with jobs for you- lawn mowing, weeding the gardens, that kind of stuff. Just be creative maybe you can come up with some ideas on your own.

Hey! Have you considered being self-employed? Age doesn't matter for jobs like baby-sitting, lawn mowing, tutoring little kids or running some kind of little summer day camp for them (teaching them a skill or crafts), fixing other people's home computers, bathing dogs, pet-sitting, etc? Honestly, you might be able to find an older person who will pay you $30/hr to teach them how to use e-mail, Word, stuff like that. Lots of older people want to learn this stuff, but are embarassed to go to a class about it. You can make good money doing these things, & you don't need permission from the state, maybe just some help from your parents with transportation.

Check out the book below. Tell your parents not to freak, you can still go to college if you read it. ;-]It just gives you ideas about how to get started earning a living without going to college first.

At 14 years old you don't have much of a choice. You'll be lucky to get a job that pays minimum wage.

Maybe you can borrow money from your parents until you're 15 1/2 or until a computer store hires you.

But if you're really good at computers why don't you make money on the internet with your computer?

You should look in to your state labor laws. Sadly I don't think you can work before 15/16 in most states.
Without working papers.

Until then mow lawns, pet sit, and or baby sit. You and a buddy/girl set up a little camp for kids - maybe doing computers.. parents are always in to this idea if you promise to give the kids your 100% and have fun!

There may be a couple places, such as small businesses and restaurants that would hire you. However, You will need a work release from your school to apply at any place before you are 16.

I know that grocery stores will typically hire minors. There are certain restrictions though. Best wishes!
