If so, what was the result? We're a non-profit and were hit with a $5,000 invoice for the unauthorized use (by a web developer who designed our site several years ago) of their copyrighted images. We were wondering what we could reasonably expect to settle for on this $5,000 fine. We're willing to pay, but hope to achieve a more reasonable amount and were hoping to rely on what others have experienced... thanks!

Get a lawyer who specializes in copyright law. It's very complicated and you will need the expert help he can provide.

don't pay anything until this party can show proof of their claim. you may be giving money away to someone who has no rights to the works either!! they need to show a chain of contracts leading back to the original author at the very least.

Ouch why not sue the developer! Aren't they responsible?
