It would be 10 times tougher than Iraq.
Saddam reigned by coercion. He only had few true supporters in the general population. Once he was weakened, the army deserted him in droves. That's why the invasion was over quickly.
Iran is a different story. Most of the population supports the government. The army is bigger and better trained. It will require far more troops and it will be a much bigger mess.

I have yet to see a decent definition of what "winning" can possibly mean in such a war, let alone figure out how to achieve it. What is victory? Does it mean killing every Muslim? That is a cruel fantasy for some religious nuts, putting them in the same class as the ones they are trying to kill. Does it mean there never being another terrorist attack anywhere in the world? That is just a pipe dream - if that's what we are waiting for we should all be told that we will have to sacrifice our children and grandchildren's lives for some surreal fantasy.
Companies like Haliburton can clearly describe the war in Iraq as a victory as they are milking US taxpayers for billions. As they are the ones with the greatest influence over this administration thus the neocons who run this country can define it as a victory as well.
I just hope we can delay the march to expansion of this horrible war into Iran enough so that a more sensible administration that can see the real risks and consequences of this war will take office and stop the escalation.

It will be worse. Iran has a well funded army. It isn't as advanced as our own, but can do some very serious damage. Plus Iran puts far more oil and gas on the market than Iraq does. A war in Iran would make gasoline prices hit five dollars the day after it starts.
This is not a war that we want.

I'd be the first in line to say that our "war" in Iraq was bogus from the get-go, but the obvious failures arise from poor post-war planning, hurried through months, when it should have been a *years-long* process of analyzing the infrastructure of health care, public services, utilities, agriculture, etc. Add to this our Idiot King's insistence that democracy must be established in a country that has never known democracy and has no notion of fighting to achieve democratic government, and you have all the makings of, as you say, a "debacle."
The U.S. won't invade Iran, because we simply can't. We've expended too much on Iraq, and in the process have left Afghanistan nearly forgotten.

What exactly would we be winning by invading Iran? If we judge by the way this war is going, it will be even worse than what we have now. Yes, our troops do deserve better than being treated like pawns in the oil industry agenda for empire.

Well I would hope we dont have to invade Iran of course.
And if it comes down to that then there needs to be a clear idea of what the goal is and what it will take to achieve that goal.
Sun Tzu said paraphrasing that 'No nation has ever benefited from protracted warfare.'

well it may turn out to be an ugly drawn out guerrilla war. The first thing to happen will be the utter destruction of the Iranian military capability and depending on Bush's mood their technological infrastructure... water, electricity, communications etc.
So really the definition of "win" is really in dispute here. There is no question that Iraq LOST the war, however it is easy to continue to make token resistance via IED's suicide bombers and such. Why don't they realize if they quit trying to pretend to be macho... we'd leave.....

We can't WIN in our terms of the word anywhere in the world. Our win means installing democracy and boatloads of Christian missionaries.
