3/9 = x/12

cross multiply...
3(12) = 9(x)
36 = 9x
4 = x

(3*12)/9
=4 feet

Set up a proportion
pole/tree=pole's shadow/tree's shadow

3/t=9/12
cross multiply
36=9t
simplify
t=4
The tree is 4 feet high
