I have a white-westinghouse electric range. The control panel temperature light goes out when it reaches the correct temperature but the element continues to glow red hot. What is wrong? I am a DIYer and would love to fix this myself. Any hints or tips?

It does take a while for a hot element to be cool enough to not glow red. Possibly you are not waiting long enough to see it turning dark.

If it is really staying on then you need to replace the control panel. It comes typically as a unit with the clock and the oven set knobs. That could be $100-$150 for the parts. The DIY effort is very simple.

If it did not go on that would be about $35 for parts and the plugging in would take a few seconds (but that is not your porblem now).

I don't know if this will help, but a few weeks ago our bottom element wouldn't turn off. It had gone through some kind of a fizzling thing. We had to turn our circuit breaker off to turn off the oven. But it's not that hard to replace an element. In our oven the elements plug into the back. You just have to unscrew the plate where it plugs in, get a new element that goes with your oven model, and plug it in. Of course, it might not be the element itself that is the problem. I'm no electrician.
