Chickens will work only if they're free range, though and all your snakes are small enough for them to eat. On the other hand, having chickens can attract yellow ratsnakes (also known in some areas as chicken snakes because they just loooove any type of hatchling bird...)
To keep all snakes out of your yard, here's what you do. Get rid of any water source (this includes birdbaths, I've seen black racers drinking out of them.) Get rid of all cover, bushes, shrubbery, trees, rocks, etc.... Oh wait, there's burrowing snakes.... go rent a bulldozer, level your yard, make sure your house doesn't have a crawlspace or basement... or an attic for that matter, pave the yard.
No snakes wi- wait... they might think it's one big basking area......
Basically, what I'm trying to get at, is that there is NO 100% EFFECTIVE WAY TO GET RID OF OR REPEL ALL SNAKES. Get yourself a field guide, and make friends with someone who does like snakes, this way, when you see a snake in your yard, you can look it up in your field guide, call your friend who likes snakes, tell them what's in the yard, they can come and get it. Or you can let fear and lack of knowledge of your local wildlife convince you to kill any snake you come across.
Keep in mind, snakes eat rodents and all kinds of other pests... you might say, "But I don't have any rats in my house/yard." Of course you don't, you have snakes.
Edited to add....
Vis, sulphur will work to an extent, but from what I understand it will kill grass and other plants and has to be reapplied after it rains. You also have to put up with the smell.

I don't.
Where I live, the only snakes are garder snakes, and i figure they keep my yard rodent free
If you liv esomewhere that you are really worried though, i suggest taking tight mesh chicken wire and putting it around the perimeter of your yard, buried in about 2 feet.

We live in the country and snakes crawl around wherever they might. The eat a lot of insects and rodents so they do good. I don't like coming acrossed one in my flower bed as I'm weeding. They always give me a scare. Sorry I'm of no help on keeping them out. They don't usually stay in one place very long although they do like Iris plants to have their young in. They like to go down into the tubers underground.

well what do snakes like to eat ; mice! try to lower the number of rodents near your property and the snakes wil probably, as a result, go away. in order to lower the number of rodents i have one tip, dont leave food sitting around, try to keep a neat house and try not to litter around your area. but dont do anything that will harm or damage the snakes!
good luck

you can post fake owls in your yard. Fake owl can be set up on a post, corner of roof, on a fence, etc.,and will repel both snakes and most ground rodents. Find fake owls in home& garden stores.
