i just bought two black skirted tetras. one is bigger(slighlty) than the other one. my smaller one follows the bigger one around, and he (the bigger one) doesnt seem to like it. within hours of putting them in their new tank, the bigger one bit the little one on teh dorsel fin. and i just went to check on them, and he has bitten the little one again. i've heard i need to buy more to keep him from bitting. is there another way to keep him from bitting?

Sorry to say that the only way to stop this is to either split them up or add more black skirts. Adding more will split up any aggressiveness and protect the more docile fish. A school of 6 or more seem to be the magic number for some reason.

The two must be of the same gender. The one that is biting is showing the other one the he/she's the boss, and that this is his/her tank. I had two male guppies, and one would bite the other's tail and chase him around; it's just a territorial issue. Eventually these boundaries will be understood, and they'll get along. You don't need to buy anymore fish, unless you want to of course!

I know this might sound as the easy way out but it seems your one tetra may be to aggressive and gender does matter. I would just flush one of them down the toilet, you cant get to attached to a fish.
