I have a Sony Vaio notebook and just want to burn some movies that I have onto DVD's. Which discs do I use to do this? DVD-R? DVD+R? DVD-RW? What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

DVD-RW means DVD rewritable. Rewritables are not recommended for movies. The only difference between the + and - of the other DVDs is just type of encoding that's used to make the disc. Both of them are highly compatible and can be replayed in the almost, if not all, regular dvd players and dvd roms.

you would be better off using either dvd-r or +r. if you were recording a show or something that you didnt want to keep permantly you could use the rw. the only difference between dvd-r and dvd+r is that all dvd player will play dvd-r discs but only a few will play dvd+r discs.

All of the discs you mention will work. The difference between DVD-R and DVD RW is that you can reuse DVD RW over again. DVD R's you cannot, they are only recordable once.

Both discs will work. The difference between the two is DVD-RW: Digital Versatile Disc-ReWrite - you can keep recording over and over again on the disc. Your second recording will record over the first and so on. DVD-R: DVD-Readable - you can only record once on the disc and not re-record over the first recording. These discs are good for information you want to keep permanent and not mess up by recording over it.

DVD-RW are rewrightable DVD's (you can burn the wipe then burn again) anthing without the W can only be burnt once. As for the DVD-R and the DVD+R they are like compeating formats of DVDs. Most players support DVD-R but not all support DVD+R. Go with the DVD-R (rewrightable if you want.

Most DVD-CD burning programs, ie; Nero, Power DVD etc; have a utility program which will analyze your system and inform you specifically which types of CD-, CD+, DVD+, or DVD- format and quite possibly all. Sometimes they will inform you which,(even though they might all be compatible) is preferred in order to provide you with the best performance. Additionally, you need to go to Sony, provide them with all the details, ie; model #, etc, and they would be the BEST source of finding out, after all, they designed it, and produced it...Have a rainbow kind-of-day..

All will work.... I think the DVD-RW are the ones you can use to re-record material, songs, movies etc..... the DVD-R can not be recorded over.

I use DVD+R. I guess anything would work though. I had 8x speed Hewlett Packard DVD's, and they seemed to burn slower than the 16x ones i have now. The rewritable ones are kind of expensive.
