Contact the customer. Make them responsible for any fee the bank charged you as well.

Sometimes it is an honest mistake and they'll want to correct it. But often it is fraud. In this case you can try to sue them.

Beyond that, be sure to ask for ID when accepting checks.

You will get a notice in the mail. Just wait for it. They may charge you a fee but just be patient. Most places have their own checking company to recover their loss. They will send you a notice or call.
