This is a great question because inexpensive and personal is difficult to do if you aren't necessarily crafty. If you are crafty and are willing to make something, a blanket, diaper cake or diaper bag (loaded with Mustela products (http://www.mustelausa.com/) are great choices. There's even a diaper caddy (made by Sara Bear) that you can find here: http://www.polkadotwhale.com/multiview/viewbrand/211/0/view/0/100/last_updated. It is basically a basket with a cute design pattern....that brings the changing table to the mommy...super useful.....Also to get some ideas about crafty baby creations visit this site for inspiration: http://www.etsy.com/category_sub.php?tags=children.baby.

But, all of these can be expensive on both TIME and money. Something that is unique and very useful is buying something for the mommy. Everyone buys baby clothes....don't do this. Here's a couple of ideas:
For breastfeeding Mommies.....A hooter hider: which is a fashionable, but elegant nursing cover. $35.00 and so useful:

There's also some very lovely mommy themed jewelry and baby keepsakes by Metalmorphsis: http://www.metalmorphosisinc.com/home.htm. They carry lovely baby spoons, pacificer clips and overall make great little gift topper ideas...which reminds me...put a gift topper on your gift to add some originality.

Lastly, if you can make a scrap book or brag book, this can be very touching. However, I would only recommend doing this is you "really" know the person and their style.

Good luck!

I just went to a shower and saw this gift that I thought was the cutest thing. Get a lined laundry basket and a blanket. Then get about twenty feet of plain rope. Buy baby clothes, and use clothes pins to pin them onto the rope. Then you put them into the laundry basket and cover it with the blanket. Remember onesies come in packages of three, socks, shoes, etc. are inexpensive.

When the mom to be opens it, just find the end and keep having the guests pull it out. It's really cute.

Get an infant hamper and fill it with some baby clothes, diapers, hangers, a pretty picture to hang on the wall, anything baby you can think of to put in the hamper. Finish it off with a big bow on the hamper. Kohl's is having a big sale this week, so you can get alotof clothes on sale.

For the baby a medicine kit (gas drops, tylenol, teething gel, ibuprofen, nose drops, etc.)

For the Mommy a realistic coupon book (everyone will offer to babysit or hold the baby while Mom cleans up but offer to be the one to run errands, do laundry or just run a vacuum so Mom can enjoy a few one on one minutes with her baby)

Make a diaper cake....or have one made!! I make custom diaper cakes and diaper wreaths....custom because they are designed to match the shower decor and baby's nursery theme!!

However, there are some great sites on the internet that will show you how to make one yourself, too!! Making it yourself is a personal touch that the new families are sure to appreciate!! PLUS....diaper cakes are so much fun!

I am putting a link to my site below....check it out to get ideas or to, perhaps, purchase?? I am also putting a link to a great page that tells you how to make one yourself!!

I crochet baby blankets. There are wonderfully soft baby yarns out there. I'll wait until I get a coupon to Jo-Ann or Michael's and get my supplies at 40% off.

Can you sew, knit, or crochet?

We got a few handmade blankets. Since you have a lot to do, you could make a hand crocheted hat in pink or blue for the baby.

My cousin got me a really cute gift. She got this step stool (wooden) that was paitned pink at Target ($20) and added a wooden B (naming her brooke) to the front of it, and put a couple small baby things inside (it opens up.)
