My friend is in court today finalizing his divorce. I want to be supportive and say the right thing. Can anyone help me with the right words to say? Thanks so much.

I guess I need help with how to bring the subject up. I mean do I say "Hey, how'd it go?" or "Hey, I'm thinking of you. If you want to grab a drink let me know." I don't want him to think I'm avoiding the issue, you know?

As far as how he feels towards it, he's said it's a good thing, but I imagine it's still tough for him to deal with.

dont worry about saying the "right" words. just be there for your friend. let them know you support him & you'll be there whenever he needs something. and just listen to him. just being there shows alot and that you care. im sure your friend appreciates it. so dont worry about saying the right words.

Invite him for drinks and/or dinner and let him talk and you be a very good listener. It will probably be devastating at first but time does heal all wounds. Try to keep him active which will keep his mind from thinking about it so much. It's when he is alone that will really bother him. When I got divorced my friends kept me busy which in turn did make the healing process go alot better and faster. Sometimes you have to find the wrong one before you find the right one. In response to the additional info: Yes give him a call and tell him you are only calling to see how things went with his divorce proceedings and just let him know you are there if he needs anything. It sounds like you may be more uncomfortable than he is, which that is an uncomfortable situation. Just let him know that if he needs anything, needs to talk, or just to get out for a night that you are there for him. Your right it may be harder than he is letting on.

There are no right words, when someone has finalized a divorce. One that may have been hard on him, or he might not have even wanted. He has a future to get on with now. Now if he is one of those that are happy about it, take him out for drinks with a group of friends.

Just be there for him. Let him know that you care by taking him out for a good time. That is if he's ready. You don't have to hook up with women. Just have a few drinks

Don't try to be miss "fix-it" people dont always want their problems solved they just want someone to lean on in the hard times. Invite your friend over just for some coffee, to get his mind off things. If he wants to talk about it then let him talk openly, if he doesnt then just let it drop. Let him know that you are here anytime if he needs to talk. :) Hope it works out.

Let him talk. Just agree. Answer only what he asks. Pray for your friend. That is a very hard thing to go through. True love will find him again.

I wanted to be alone when I went through one. I'm not sure I would have cared for anyone saying "I'm sorry" to me.
I do think I appreciated people asking me, "How are you doing." or "You OK?"
You know...there can be very mixed emotions and one doesn't necessarily even know how they feel. Just be there in case he/she/it wants to tell you about it.

When my son got his divorce he didn't want to hear or talk about it. There were no right words.

Just let him know that you are here for him, and any time he want to talk, let him know that you will be available to him.
