OK. I have colored eggs for years with my mom. I haven't done it for a few years but now have kids old enough that they can participate. My family used to leave the eggs out for a few days and could still eat them with no problems. My husbands family says that you can eat them, but only right after coloring them or they need to stay in the refrigerator. We never got sick when I was younger. Were we just lucky?

I was getting ready to ask this question when yours popped up. It looks like a week in the fridge is safe. Don't you love coloring them? My daughter is 4 months old, and won't really know what I am doing, but I really want to do it. Have fun with it!

By the way, I learned to cut the color tablets in half. Mix one half in vinegar and water, and the other in just water. The first will be bright, the other pastel.

Happy Easter!

While uncooked eggs can be stored for about 3 weeks after they are purchases, hard-boiled eggs, however, should be consumed within a week. Egg shells are porous. The hen makes up for this by adding a natural coating, but the government insists that eggs be washed and sanitized before being sold, which washes away the coating. The egg processor sprays on a thin coating of an odorless natural mineral oil to reseal the egg. But cooking washes this coating away leaving a drafty shell once more, which is susceptible to the invasion of odors, off-flavors, and bacteria. Hence the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the American Egg Board, and other egg know-it-alls give you a week to use up your hard-boiled eggs (providing you got them into the refrigerator within two hours of cooking).

Hey, my girl friends family colors the eggs and they boil them normally but add vinegar to the color dyes to get the colors to stay on. Also they put the eggs in the refrigerator right away. I'd recommend you not leaving them out for more then the day, or even less.

I've never used boiled eggs. We always blew out the yolk etc. You might want to try this, I liked blowing the egg haha. All you do is poke a hole in the top and bottom with a pin/needle.

but eating colorful eggs sounds fun too....or funner yay.

I think they stay good for over a week if refridgerated. I'm sure there is a way to paint them before and the boil them later ....and not have to dye come off. Hopefully someone else knows.

Have fun :)

In USA do not leave hard boiled eggs out for more than an hour. They stay good refrigerated for a couple weeks. I remember leaving them out all night as a kid..but things were different then..your eggs were fresher..and more natural.

You need to refrigerate them, and they should stay good for a week at least.
