You will need a wireless cable/DSL router for an ntl connection. Your modem will plug into this, and an ethernet cable will run from the router into the desktop computer. For this, there must be a Network Interface PCI card in the desktop, or the desktop must have an ethernet port.

The laptop should pick up the wireless connection from the router, but be sure to put a security password on the connection, preferably WPA as it is practically un-hackable.

The best DSL/Cable router in my opinion is a Linksys router, as these are made by Cisco and are a doddle to set up and configure.

NB: Make sure it is a Cable/DSL router and NOT an ADSL router

Virgin/NTL/Telewest: DSL/Cable

BT/Tiscali/Orange/Sky: ADSL

Ok you have 2 options, the cheap option & the expensive option
The cheap option: Buy a wireless PCi card (costs about £5), Put it into the desktop computer Then share the connection.

The expensive option (which is much better): purchase a wireless router (costs roughly £50), Then you will be able to connect to the internet independently which will make it faster.

I hope this helps you

I bought a Belkin router but it soon failed so I paid a few quid extra and got a Netgear. At the moment you will have a cable from your modem to your desktop. This cable will now connect the modem to the router and an additional cable will connect the router to your desktop. The router will come with easy to follow instructions for setting up your laptop. My only problem was when I changed my router and forgot the password I had used but I found a reset feature in the instructions.

you don't specify whether you use a pc or mac as that may make a difference. i have (mac) wireless and use a bluetooth device so maybe try that. you may have to download it or it may be enabled via your computers' settings. hope that helps!
