I have an indian head nickle with the bison on the back.

the year is smudged off and i am hoping to find out what year it might be and if it is worth anything.

how long did they run this particular nickle

Mirrorcoin gave you the scoop on the nickel, I will give you the info on getting the date. You need to see a coin dealer and get a bottle of nic-a-date. Using it as directed will bring the date out. One thing, most collectors feel this damages the coin as it does make a stain where the date is to raise it. On the other side, you won't know the date unless you do it. if your local dealer does not have it or won't get it for you go to www.brooklyngallery.com they are a large supply dealer and sell at reasonable prices, they have it. these nickels are known as Buffalo, Bison or Indian head nickels .they were designed by James E. Fraser. they were minted 1913-1938 . I hope this information helps

With no date ,it is only worth about 8 cents .
The indians in Arizona buy them to make buckles and bolo ties .They also make other jewelry with them too .
They were minted from 1913 to 1938 At Phila.,Denver,and San Francisco mints.
