Is Jordan the greatest?....why wouldn't he be...when you think about greatness it contains so much more than just numbers...think of what he did for the sport of basketball...Jerry West may have been the symbol but Jordan was the FACE of the NBA...everybody from kids to grandmothers wanted to watch him play...in most cases his name may have been the only name someone outside of the basketball world knew...talk about a household name...in fact NBC should hand over some royalties because Air Jordan and the Bulls made the NBA on NBC what it was (until the contract was bought by that other station) the whole country waited on the Sunday afternoon game..to see him against the Knicks, Heat, Pistons, Pacers, you name it...classic moments each time out..you knew you would see something that you had never seen before...I remember where i was when he lit up Boston, I remember jumping up down after "The Shot" the baseline move against the Knicks, even when he dunked on Mark Eaton of the Jazz...when Kobe scored 81 I had no idea until Sportscenter spoke about it...and it was a televised game!...He transcended the game...Kobe has tarnished it not only with his on the court antics but as well as with his breaking of the locker room code...A PERSON COULD HAVE ONLY REASON TO NOT LIKE MIKE AND THAT IS BECAUSE HE ALWAYS BEAT YOUR TEAM...i can remember hearing people being interviewed saying how before the game the felt like "damm we gotta go againt Mike tonight"...the person who you know is gonna get the ball so you put three people on him and what does he do....make the shot anyway....game over good night and go home...how can he not be the greatest...he's the reason half the league is playing now...THATS INFLUENCE FOR YA @ZZ...even now I see young guys playing on the court and when they make a move or go for a fade the always holla one thing "JORDAN"...thats greatness...and remembe this...whenever any of the legends are asked about the greatest ever...they all give the same answer...MIKE...skip the numbers...skip the awards and the accomplishments...if i'm not mistaken though Mike won every possible award there is except for Most Improved Player, Sixth Man of the Year (both for obvious reasons) and the three point title...you can not compete with his mental toughness, the fact that Mike out thought his opponents..his desire to not lose and any cost...you say Kobe has that same desire but he don't, he only desires to be the man...he desires to be "that guy"...sad thing is he never will...

Every generation has a greatest player for that generation. Mine could choose AIR, MAGIC, or the LEGEND. Some might say Dr. J, Kareem, Wilt, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West(the logo himself), on and on. My dad says Elgin Baylor & Oscar Robertson, and my mon says Pistol Pete Maravich. It all depends on who you ask! Bird and Magic made more clutch shots than anybody and probably from longer distances than anybody ever, Jerry West was Mr. Clutch. Was jordan great yes, the greatest of his time, yes once Magic & Bird left the game. Maybe thats why Jordan seems so great because he never had to win titles against anyone who wanted it as much as he did. Thats why we talk about Magic & Bird, Wilt & Bill. Jordan didnt have anyone to shoot for. As far as Jordan vs. Kobe, Jordan had 9 long years of missery before the success. he was labeled a ballhogging hotdog who could score 60 points on any night, just ask Larry and the Celtics, that no one liked. Then the Bulls found Scottie, Horace, and a guy named Phil who put the puzzle together, and made Jordan a happy man. So be more specific, is Jordan the best what in NBA history? If winning titles is the benchmark, Jordan should come out of retirement and win a few more so he can catch Bill Russell. He has 10 and did it dominating on defense.

Larry Brid. If you look at career stats the only stat that Jordan beats Bird in is points and points per game, because Jordan was a ball hog. The NBA was much weaker in the 90's. Jordan would not have won 6 rings going against the teams in the 80's like the lakers and the celtics. And if you are going to base this soley on rings then remember that Bill Russel has 11 and Magic has 5.

Larry Bird made his teammates better. Period. As a rookie he has the second highest team increase in wins in history (32), and he was the ONLY change. They traded for Robert Parish and drafted Kevin McHale the following season. (The Spurs have the highest with 35 when they drafted David Robinson, but he didn't play for two years while fulfilling his military duty and the Spurs also acquired Sean Elliott, Terry Cummings and Rod Strickland who were later all-stars as well as Robinson.) The Celtics were 29-53 the year before he was drafted and 61-21 with Bird in the roster. They lost to Philadelphia in the conference finals. His second year they were 62-20 and he led the Celtics to the NBA title. His third year they were 63-19, and they lost in the conference finals to Philadelphia.
Jordan's rookie year, the Bulls were 38-44 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Jordan's second year the Bulls were 30-52, although he spent 64 games out with a foot injury so the team record didn't have a lot to do with him - they lost in the first round of the playoffs. His third year the Bulls were 40-42, and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Jordan's fourth season (his third full season), the Bulls were 50-32 and lost in the second round of the playoffs.

As of right now Micheal Jordan is hands down the greatest NBA player in history, when you can single handedly win as many championships as he did prior to retirement and after retirement you obviously have something very special, you can argue that Kobe is, but can he single handedly with championships or does he need Shaq? Until someone can show that they can take over games (when they count) and can win chmpionships then we can get more conversations going, but until then MJ hands down.

In my lifetime yes in my dads lifetime I dont know. The main reason mj was a major success was because he took the league when it was in a transition period and became the sole face of the nba so along with his playing talent and how he changed the game then yes he is in my lifetime

He is one of the greatest, but Kobe doesn't fall behind either. If I had to choose between MJ or Kobe, Kobe will be the greatest by the time he retires.
