I used to have really strong and hard fingernails so I got to grow them long. During the first week of growth from perfectly trimmed nails (about a quarter or an eight of an inch), dirt goes under the nail easily. When the white part has gotten about half an inch to an inch the dirt doesn't get it easily but when there is dirt it is easier to clean out with an orange stick or with my other fingernails. If it is at its longest length lotsa things get stuck under it like food particles, cosmetic products etc. That's when it gets hard to clean. No matter what picking I did the color would leave a semi permanent pigmentation under my nails. That would be my sign to cut them again. As for fake nails, I've only tried press on nails and they really aren't that hard to clean. Acrylic nails are molded onto your nailbed and according to my friends feel like your own. I'm guessing by the looks of it, the more decent lengths like natural and sporty are harder to clean since they are shorter. The outrageously long nails pick up dirt that can easily be removed.

Depends on how long they are. My nails are real and long (but not to long) and I have a hard time keeping them clean. So just imagine...

i have quite long nails and mine are always clean, as long as you wash your hands thoroughly at appropriate times there is no reason why they would not be kept clean

i honestly don't see how they can possibly clean themselves properly without causing some degree of self-injury :)

I clean them regularily, but I don't have ultra-long nails. I think they call it 'sport-length'.
