i think people lie on chat because they find fun in lying especially when they know you can never know the truth .forexample when a boy who doesnt really look handsome or charming they lie on chat because no one can discover their lies and the same for girls,no one can see them and its fun to imagine wht you want to be and simply lie on people and yourself and say good points you imagine of your self.

People lie on chat for many different reasons. Some lie so that people won't know their true identity. Some lie so they can seem better then they really are. Some lie for attention. Some lie because they are afraid to let me know the truth about them.

The internet is place you can go and be as anonymous or as open as possible. You can be anything you want to be when you're typing away at the computer. So if you're a short guy who always wanted girls that wanted taller guys then you just add a few inches when you're typing. If you're a fat girl who always wanted to be skinny you lie about your weight, its just so easy to do that people do it. Not saying its right, but unfortunately its the norm, so don't meet anyone online expecting them to be 100% truthful about everything.

Why not? I guess because they're bored. Gives them a chance to be someone else - maybe who they wish they were. To goof off and have fun - entertainment. Because they have problems? Who knows.
What I would be concerned about is - why do some people think they can trust people on chat are who they say they are? People who believe that seem to have more problems.

Because there are no consequences. You are very unlikely to meet somebody you only ever chat with, and therefor you can tell them whatever you want. They don't live anywhere near you, they'll never know. Unfortunately, people who go by that ethic often catch themselves out in the end.

Because it's the internet, and people behind a computer screen can make themselves out to be absolutely anyone. You can never 100% trust someone you know off a chatroom unless you have seen them on webcam or in real life.

I think almost everyone I have chatted with online has lied about something...maybe its a safety thing? Like if they feel insecure about something they lie about it and probably feel like well i'm never gonna see them so whats it gonna hurt?

That's sort of the whole point of it, I guess. They can create this whole "alter-ego" and be who they wish they really were for a little while. Weird. If they told everyone they were really a 40 year old tax accountant, who would want to talk to them? Much more interesting to be a hot, 25 year old race car driver, right?

Because they can. And it's easy, too. Chat allows you to assume any persona you wish. You can be cool, good looking, glib, exciting, adventurous, and you never have to tell your neal name or show your real face. You can even change genders. I often wonder how many "women" out there in cyberland are really men.

you can only really trust someone that seems to want to get to know you that obviously wont lie cause there will come a day when you will want to meet
as far as why they lie...the only thing that i can think of is that they are embarressed of themselves and they really dont have anything better to do
