Actually, where there are train routes, train travel tend to be as cheap as, sometimes cheaper than, bus, for coach class travel. There are some exception, such as the first class commuter train between NYC and WA D.C.

I have done a lot of cost and route comparison, and most of the time, train is a few dollars less than bus, and it's a lot more pleasant and enjoyable, not to mention scenic.

I recommend first seeing if Amtrak has routes between the areas you want to travel. If they do not, then look into bus. Do also check http://www.priceline.com or similar for plane ticket prices too, as occasionally I have found prices comparable to train travel when you add in the cost of food and drinks.

The absolute cheapest way is in a carpool. Otherwise, take Greyhound. Trains are really expensive and limited in routes.
