IMHO illiteracy is our societies greatest problem. Further, I believe that our educational system is failing the students who need the most help. Our teachers are busy from day one discouraging curiosity and exploration, and they have "dumbed down" our curriculum's to the point where our talented students are expected to meet the same standards as our intellectually challenged students. An high school diploma has become an attendance certificate.Parents are part of the problem, as they do not demand enough from our school systems. Educational success will provide our students with the skills needed to survive in the 21st century. Parental concern about morality and social behaviours can only be addressed through education, whether in the home or in school. Personally, I would advise you to use my opinion thoughtfully, but it is probably a bad idea to openly discuss it in school, as some teachers are offended by the idea they might not be doing a good job. You should be encouraged to discuss this comment with your parents, however, as they might have thoughts on the matter, as well. Good Luck. Hope you learn a lot from this assignment.

I think the biggest problem society faces is the lack of any absolute truths and values anymore. It's true that America was founded on the belief in certain inalienable rights: life, liberty and property (sometimes referred to euphemistically as "the pursuit of happiness"). We claim to believe in freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. We preach tolerance of all, including those who would be intolerant of us. These are noble goals, but they are being obfuscated by some.

Religion. Throughout history, religion has been a wolf in sheep's clothing to society and civilization. While it will claim to preach goodness, it has only been used to start wars and prevent intellectual and social progress. For the past several thousand years, it has been religious turmoil that have lead to the worlds longest and most brutal wars. It is religion and oppression of the church that prevented invention and scientific progress for 1500 years between the time of Romans to the middle-ages. And for what, the belief in a God that on every level breaks every law of logic and reasoning in order to have "faith" in it.

I think that parents don't have enough time to spend with their kids. Then, to make matters worse, they over-schedule them into a zillion after school activities and think that it's great! I think if families spent more time together, many of the problems we face would not be an issue at all. My two cents!

I will assume that you mean American society.
Society's biggest problem would be miseducation.
There is a belief that certain groups are more deserving, better, smarter, thinner, phatter, etc.... than others. This false premise has created a bone-marrow deep level of mental illness that will probably not be cured until some mother ship arrives and tells us who we truly are... You know..."yo, human....." That, of course, would bring us all...together...at last.
