in older pictures (70s) people rarely smiled, even on their wedding day. why has this trend started?

Way back when, in the 1800's, nobody smiled in pictures.
~A smile was believed to distort the natural appearance of ones face. So, they kept straight faces in pictures, to capture their natural appearance.

in the old days camera's were more work to use. (not the 70's, but 60's) One picture could take more than 10 minutes to take. Who wants to smile that long? They probably started out smiling and got worn out.

People look better when they smile!
In the really old days, when cameras were first invented, people would have to hold their pose and expression for ten minutes or so. It's very hard to hold a smile that long. So pictures from the 1910s and earlier look very somber, even if the people in them were perfectly happy and lively.

Everybody doesn't smile. But there is a greater likelihood to get a smile now. I think we all just want to be happier. Plus, back in the '70s, everyone was high...

the reason people didn't smile in older pics is because it took so long to get the shot so when the picture was finally snapped they weren't smiling anymore ..I saw this info on a show I watched on the History channel

We smile because we don't want to look angry in our picture is that a way to remember our years at work or school?

I was always taught when I was a kid to smile...
The photographer usually said say CHEESE!!!!
and you would come back with this fake grin...
Maybe where those pictures were taken they didn't hear
about saying cheese... or the people were serious...

Bc back then they wanted the pics to look natural, now we want people to think we are always happy, so we smile when we get pics. Other people see it and think "wow, what a happy person"
