That sounds strange. My mother has a 2004 Acura MDX and she never had that problem. Go to your local Acura dealer to check what's wrong.

My MDX was stalling and idling rough when cold. It would stall when I put in drive or reverse unless I warmed it up for 4-5 minutes.
If it's for a 2001-02 model, the rotary valve (idle control valve) is the most likely culprit. We usuallu just replace the entire throttle body assembly since we can get that covered under a 7/70 emissions system warranty.
First, try to get the code. If you have an OBD-II reader, it should be easy enough.
Second, as Supertech said, it could be covered under the 7/70K emission warranty, so check out that possibility.
Third, you can remove the IAC pretty easily, then separate the rotary valve from the solenoid. After that, you can really spray clean the valve with some throttle body cleaner to remove all the gunk in there. I did that when my IAC acted up 30k miles ago right after the warranty expired, and it still works now. The whole job took about 1-2 hours, but I would understand if you'd rather be surfing

Honda had a recall for the replacement of the ignition switch on their most of their models from 1999 through 2001. The ignition switch is the part behind the key lock cylinder that you put the key in and turn. The switch allows electricity to flow through the car when its circuits are compelted by turning the key.
when the ignition switch goes bad the car will just "shut off" while driving down the road. The car will usually restart immediatly after you coast to a stop and put it in park or neutral to restart it.
Beyond that, we'll need more information to help you, such as when does it turn off--coming to a stop? while driving? when turning? at what speed does it happen? does it happen at stops? How long do you have to drive the car before it happens? what is the engine temperature when it happens? what is the engine speed when it happens? how often does it happen?
I would start by calling your Acura dealer and asking them to run a vehicle history inquiry on your car to determine if the ignition switch recall (or any other recalls) apply to your vehicle. You will have to give them the vehicle identification number from your car to do that. It will be on your vehicle registration and insurance cards. If the recall applies, it will be done at no charge to you. Otherwise, pay them the charge to diagnose the problem.
hope that helps
