An earthquake is a trembling or shaking of the ground caused by the sudden release of energy that is being stored in the rocks beneath the surface. Once the strain becomes too great, the Earth shifts releasing massive amounts of energy that may vary. How strong an earthquake is, is dependant upon many factors, one being the rock strata in which it occurs.
