Um no. It's an operating system.

No, it takes a Live CD. There are configurations of Linux small enough to fit on a floppy, but you would have a command line only. The Live CD includes a desktop and software. It's worth it, just to have a tool to see if "the other" Operating System is preventing the computer from powering up.

I like Ubuntu. I hardly had to do anything to get it going. Linux is rock-solid is all I can say. Programs might crash, but the OS is never going to trash a hard drive nor write a virus to critical files.

No, but there are other easy ways for testing linux without installation.
there is a certain distribution(kind/version) of linux which runs on top of windows as a normal program without installation and it's called topologilinux : http://topologi-linux.sourceforge.net/
and there are other distributions which can run directly from a cd/dvd rom without installing, and here is a list of them choose what you like: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
and in general if u r new to linux, when u've tested linux, liked it and is ready to install it. i recommend installing it beside windows as a secondary operating system, instead of depending on it solely.and i recommend the following distributions for you:opensuse, ubuntu and fedora core.
and when you get ready and can depend 100% on linux just use it as your ultimate os and remove windows.
i hope i gave you what you wanted

Yes...there are plenty of distros that you can boot from using a bootable CD. Start with knoppix to get your feet wet. Search for it.

Nothing will be changed on your hard drive or existing OS.

Ask your ISP if it has a "shell machine". Many do. You can get a login on that and try it out
