I love sports and want to be involved. i am pursuing my teaching degree and will get a coaching certification. Even though I never formally played, I still feel that I can do a good job at coaching. any advice?

Of course you can still be a good/great coach without having played the game. Does the name Charlie Weis ring a bell? He only has 4 SB rings as a coordinator in the NFL, and he's the head coach of Notre Dame, and he never played football.

You dont have to play the game to be a good or even great coach. Can it help? Sure it can, because you can relate to it better. Does this mean you'd be a better coach? Not at all. The only thing you have to have is a desire to learn and a passion for the game. Some of the very best coaches never played the game, and some of the very worst were great players.

If I were you, I would talk to real coaches that are in your area, and get them to talk to you. Sometimes having a friend in the business can really help you in the long run. In either regard, good luck!

You don't need to have played football to be a good coach as someone stated above. It just helps, particularly with getting an initial job. Look into starting in a youth or middle school program. Middle school is a great entry point because you get to typically work with high school coaches and get connections (huge in coaching). Go to clinics in the spring to meet people.

Biggest thing to understand is that you aren't going to start out at the top. You need to accept that you may not get paid at all for a couple years and you may have to coach freshman/jv/middle school for a couple years. Commitment, loyalty and hardwork go a long way in coaching and it can often be more politics than anything else.

you can get a job even if you never played. you would obviously have to start out small though. try to find a job being an assistant at a high school football team. if you do well, you might become a head coach. if you are recognized from that position, get yourself a promotion in the ncaa. its a ladder you try to move up. however, you have to be very good to move up though. coaching is a very difficult career to pursue. to get started, you either need connections or a certification, which you stated you are going to get. thats all you need.

Youth leagues are always looking for volunteer coaches. Contact the youth sports organization in your county, and try coaching one of those teams for a year or two. In addition to giving you something to put on your resume when applying for a school coaching position, it will give you valuable experience, and a chance to experiment with certain aspects of coaching.

Don't give up. Follow that dream. Take each small coaching job as it comes and work up.
