I have been applying for jobs for awhile, over a year even. If people agreed to be references for me back then, do I need to ask them again now? Or do you think once someone agrees, it is lonstanding?

You don't have to, but it's nice and the polite thing to ask them again, and also to keep in touch with them, not just when you need something (ie. the reference). Plus it's a good thing for them not to be caught off guard if asked for a reference. Always a good idea to keep in touch with your references. It makes for a better reference.

I tell my friends that I will ALWAYS vouch for them... so they never have to ask me again. The polite ones always do, of course...

But if a former co-worker asked me ...or if I was someone's employer... I would appreciate being asked with each new job search. (Re: each time you go looking... not each new interview.) It would give me the chance to know if you were available again for work, as well as would give you the ability to update addresses and phone numbers if there were any changes.

If the people on your referral list are friends... I'd say no, you don't need to ask. If they are former business contacts - it would be both polite and a safeguard for the accuracy of your resume' to touch base again.

Peace hon.

If it's someone you know better, it's probably not necessary. If you haven't been in touch, it would be a good thing to ask....maybe your information about this person has changed.
