The major moutain belts of the earth with higher mountain ranges tend to be geologically younger then those with lower mountain ranges, due to ersional factors. A mountain range with specific rock strata from a specific geologic time can be dated, this is usually done with the aid certain types of fossils known to that geologic time or by radiometric dating.
