Windows 98 is grown out of MS-DOS with a hook into the 32 bit world. It is limited in usable memory space and disk space.
Windows XP grew out of Windows NT, which is based around a 32 bit system. It has a much higher memory and disk space limit. RAM can be expaned to 4GB on many motherboards. Hard drive space can be larger than 500GB and even bigger if the hardware wasn't limiting. But a 64-bit version of Windows XP is available for AMD 64 and other processors.
Since computers after 2000 did not ship with Windows 98, you have an aging computer. Step up to the future and get an awesome new machine .
Good luck and Happy Computing

XP is 3 generations later in the long line of microsoft operating systems. XP has alot more to offer than 98 and doesn't crash nearly as much as 98, but it is still *microsoft*. Much of the software you buy today will not run on 98.
I like win2000 just fine (until it becomes too obsolete to run some of the latest software).

Windows 98 (codenamed Memphis) is a graphical operating system released on June 25 1998 by Microsoft and the successor to Windows 95. Like its predecessor, it is a hybrid 16-bit/32-bit monolithic product.
Windows XP is a line of proprietary operating systems developed by Microsoft for use on general-purpose computer systems, including home and business desktops, notebook computers, and media centers. The letters "XP" stand for eXPerience and and is the first consumer-oriented operating system produced by Microsoft to be built on the Windows NT kernel and architecture.

It is more reliant, it is more user friendly, and it is much better at networking, and it is more stylish and faster.
Plus, all the programs that are coming out now are not compatible with windows 98, so there is no point in having the 98 Operating System anyway.
Hope this answers your question.

Microsoft stopped supporting windows 98. This operating system was not secure, had many flows and was not stable. Windows XP is much more stable environment, although it is not perfect or secure (hence, comes Vista)

Better user management, better security. But the OS is only as good as the person who installed it. Check out Belarc for advise on how to configure windows.
