Communism, in a nutshell, is a social/economic system where no form of stratification exists: No classes, no race division, no ethnocentrism, no gender bias, etc.
It's a trick question. There hasn't been a single Communist nation on this planet.
Edit: You'll get many answers citing that Communism is a "Statist" (or state owned) industrial system where the government owns the industry. This is incorrect and founded on a "chicken and the egg" style of defining Communism. They take Statist countries (like the Soviet Union and China), which have/had Communist parties leading them, and then reverse the definition to fit the fact that someone told them, at one time, that those were Communist countries.
The establishment of a Statist economy is actually impossible to merge with Communism since Statism is the establishment of a government-based upper class, thus not fulfilling the Communist requirement to negate stratification.
In other words, these people who think Statism == Communism lack an understanding of social and economic systems at a very fundamental level.

Communism as defined and coined by Karl Marx and others is the extreme of socialism, every thing is produced for the state. Its supposed to be a even distribution of sustenance and there really should be no such thing as rich or poor, haves and have nots, and everyone is equal. There has never been a true communist society. Scholars say that the closest thing that actually worked was the early People's Republic of China. The only ones left that are actually called communist are China, Cuba, North Korea, and I believe Nicaragua is still considered communist. They all ended up being under control of an elite totalitarian organization that held more power and "wealth" than the rest of the society.

Communism is defined as all people being equal and having an equal say, thus meaning that there is no real leadership but that everyone has an equal say in everything. There has been no "true" communist country. The USSR was a socialist-republic ans so is China. Thus meaning that they had socialist ideas but coupled those with capitalist ideas as well.
