To be exact the moon on Wednesday, April 29, 1981 was:
Moon's age (days): 24
Distance (Earth radii): 58.59
Percent Illumination 21.52%
Ecliptic latitude (degrees): -2.95
Ecliptic longitude (degrees): 334.34

The Waxing Gibbous Moon
The waxing gibbous Moon is very nearly full and illuminated generally from the right. This phase of the Moon is seen to rise sometime in the afternoon when few people are looking at the sky. This is why it usually goes unnoticed until it gets dark at sunset. By that time the gibbous Moon is well above the southeastern horizon. The Moon is in this phase for nearly a week between first quarter and full. Just a day or so before Full Moon the waxing gibbous Moon appears nearly full and might be mistaken for a full Moon. The Moon in this phase sets just shortly before sunrise.

Moon Phases

Crescent Moon - when we can see only a sliver of the moon's disk (the side of the moon facing us)
Full Moon - when the moon's disk is light because the Earth is between the sun and the moon

Gibbous Moon - when we can see roughly three-quarters of the moon's disk

Half Moon - (also called quarter moon) when we can see one half of the moon's disk (this is one-quarter of the entire moon's surface)

New Moon - when the moon's disk is dark (and invisible to us) because the moon is between the sun and the Earth
Quarter Moon - (also called half moon) when we can see one half of the moon's disk (this is one-quarter of the entire moon's surface)

Waning Moon - when the moon seems to be getting smaller, going from full to gibbous to half to crescent to new

Waxing Moon - when the moon seems to be getting bigger, going from new to crescent to half to gibbous to full

Dark Moon - Not visible
New Moon - Not visible, or traditionally, the first visible crescent of the Moon
Waxing Crescent Moon - Right 1-49% visible
First Quarter Moon - Right 50% visible
Waxing gibbous Moon - Right 51-99% visible
Full Moon - Fully visible
Waning gibbous Moon - Left 51-99% visible
Third Quarter Moon - Left 50% visible
Waning Crescent Moon - Left 1-49% visible
New Moon - Not visible

On April 29, 1981 the lunar cycle was in a last quarter state, according to my astrology program (Blue-Star by Matrix).

The moon was on the 24th day of the lunar cycle. The Gibbous phases occur on the 10th and 18th days of the lunar cycle. So, this date was 6 days after the waning gibbous phase.

See the site below for a nice graphic of the lunar phases.
