Welfare was not ended, just reformed, successfully,,the same way Clinton did. Is he running for president now? I was hoping he would...I heard a great interview on NPR with him...and he seems to have an actual plan for Iraq that is pretty bipartisan. He also has had success with many domestic programs, something that Reps are NOT known for. And yes, I think that the medicare reform had something to do with his resignation.

Let's not forget that Tommy's interest in companies that made huge profits with the so-called Medicare/health reforms under Dubya may have had something to do his decisions... Colin Powell is a very honorable and decent man who's loyalty prevented him from slamming the idiotic decisions by the White House politicos that underminded the professional soldiers, men trained and experienced in military matters. Big difference.
EDITED: information_police, you're thinking of FRED Thompson, former Republican Senator from Tennessee... not the same as TOMMY Thompson, former Governor of Wisconsin... who reformed Welfare in his state.
RUNNING for President gives the candidates the opportunity to amass huge funds to go around and stay in fancy, swanky hotel suites and eat all sorts of gormet foods and drink all the booze and have a grand time partying, boozing, whoring, paying off cronies... the waste is unbelievable... and the major political parties (including the Independent Party, the so-called "third" party) do this and have done this since camaigning was "invented"... what the heck, no one complains...!

If I remember correctly it was due to a disagreement with the administration over his concerns regarding a terrorism attack against our food supply, which he said would be incredibly easy to do. He also had concerns regarding a pandemic flu and bioterrorism attacks. He set up a “command and control” center in HHS headquarters and lobbied for billions of dollars in federal funding to shore up the sagging U.S. public health system. This included better surveillance of disease outbreaks and a controversial plan to resurrect vaccination against smallpox,. His concerns were dismissed and therefore resigned.
Side note to Kevin: We have a Tommy Thompson in the small town I live in. He actually got arrested during a peaceful protest because when asked his name--and he answered honestly (this was when Gov Thompson was the gov) the deputies thought he was being a smart @$$. Actually in real life THIS TT is--he is probably the idiot you went to school with. Pretty common name.
Side note to hyperion monk: You may thank current Governor Doyle for that!

As a proud Wisconsinite I am very disappointed in Thompson, he left us with his douche bag lieutenant Governor Scott Macullam who would have destroyed our state if it was not for Jim Doyle saved our state.
Thompson has no chance for the president. He was contemplating running against Doyle for Governor in 2006 but realized Wisconsin did not want him back due to the mess he made when he left.

Probably. Anyone with any hope of a future career in politics or has any integrity does leave the Bush Administration without a scandal.

As a liberal I like Tommy...Anyone, who lost 40 pounds as Health and Human Service Secretary, because he hated being a hypocrite is a man I really respect.

Debate is still on as to the "success" of his welfare reform. Fact is that many just moved across the border to Minnesota to collect welfare.
