I read the link. AMOK is mild. This is bordering on Nazism. I don't agree with these actions. This is absolutely ridiculous.

lets approach this from a different perspective.
Kids have always done wild unthinking things.
But there used to be a lot of space to got out and be wild without harming.
Our society had condensed down to where kids have less than 200 feet to "Act out" this requires the parents to educate the children to act accordingly.
now that brings up what some consider Accordingly. Won't go there in the post.
I am an advocate of the Constitution as it was intended, not as it has been manipulated.
So Under the freedom of speech the Child has the freedom to say what he wants.
Now if what he is saying is intended to harm emotionally or physically then this crosses the border of Freedom of speech to bullying.
In the 70's when such an incident happened the School would contact someone to come in and five a sensitivity seminar.
I was on one such team. It helped.

Hmm. That's a tough one. On the one hand, I know that police "overreaction" is no myth. On the other hand, sensitivity to and respect for fellow human beings is far from evolved. Followed to its logical conclusion, with that sort and degree of police involvement, there would be a whole lot fewer Yahoo answerers out there, lol.

Since the cops spoke with school staff FIRST, it argues SOME validity to the other parents' complaint...

Even if I, as the parent of the "accused" disagreed with the police involvement, I would not show it in front of my son; I would support the idea that his behaviour was not acceptable and not all that trivial. Unfortunately, the parents inadvertantly (I hope) ended up appearing to defend their son's action. And it's not very reassuring that the kid's response/excuse, that gay only meant "stupid", was apparently not countered by anyone...?

SOMEONE PLEASE, bring back simple good manners.

If it is a true story, it is an absolutey ridiculous way to handle a child's ignorant speech. The parents should have contacted the other parent's and allowed them to sit their child down and explain why "gay" should not be used as a slur. It could have been a great opportunity to educate the child, not scare the living s*it* out of him.

I'll completely agree with you if everything happened as was said in the article. (I just can't wrap my mind around it, but there really are people that much in love with their little bit of power.) That was a matter for the teacher and principal, NOT police.

Hate speech is never justified, nor legal. The Constitution does NOT cover speech that has harm as its intent, such as hate speech, or yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater.

However, it does sound like this could have been handled less physically.

A tad on the overkill side, however, I did find it revealing that the parents didn't think their kid being a bully was a problem.
