One way to plow a field is the three-furrow approach. The first pass down the field will result in the first furrow slice being laid on the ground at the original field level with the use of strong moist muscle. The second furrow slice will fall into the furrow created by the first. The third furrow slice falls into the second furrow slice and the last leaves a deep moist furrow that is ready to be plowed.
The next pass will require the farmer to drive in the furrow left from the previous pass. This allows the first furrow slice to fall into the furrow in which the farmer is diving. The farmer repeats the process until the field is well prepared.
Large fields are usually broken into smaller sections. The farmer does not waste time diving to the return side as the area plowed becomes wider. They then plow the ends to complete the field.
