it's like a chicken foot with a circle around, not just a foot print of a chicken. It can also be done by sticking a "V" with your index and middle fingers.

Have you ever SEEN chickens fight? It is not pretty.

Sometimes the "peace symbol" is called "chickentrack" even by those who use it or "crow's foot". It has also been likened to a number of occult signs.

In Unicode, the peace symbol is U+262E: ☮, and can thus be generated in HTML by typing
(& #x262E); or
(& #9774 )

The "peace sign" was designed and completed February 21, 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a commercial designer and artist in Britain. It was commissioned by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Goya's "Peasant Before the Firing Squad"
Holtum, a conscious objector during WWII wrote to Hugh Brock, editor of Peace News, explaining the genesis of his idea in greater depth: "I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya’s "Peasant Before the Firing Squad". I formalised the drawing into a line and put a circle round it." He also mentioned that he had intended its obvious resemblance to the anarchy symbol.

The symbol itself is a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for Nuclear Disarmament. In semaphore the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. These two signals imposed over each other form the shape of the peace symbol. In the original design the lines widened at the edge of the circle.

No, it comes from the symbol for nuclear disarmament. If you use the semaphore flag system, the letter "N" is at a 45' to the vertical on the left and the letter "D" is on the right, thus a "peace" sign. This comes from the early ban the bomb movement.

It is a combination of semaphore N & D as in nuclear disarment.
It is a anti-nuc symbol.
