Most likely I do. And it's usually to spare someone's feelings...I try not to lie about anything big.

Hmm... let's put it this way: Between lies and truth, it is quite obvious which is more popular. If there were an election, and one candidate always told only the truth, and the other always made the audience hear what they wanted to, who do you think would be electied? The liar, almost without a doubt. Consider also that theoretically the best liar in the world is the one who is not only never caught, but never even detected.

So lies are more popular. That is a kind of power. The truth itself, however, is also a kind of power - it gets things done well, while lies do not. Thus, the most powerful person is arguably the one who KNOWS the truth but TELLS lies. He not only holds the power of truth and the power of lies for himself, but denies the truth to others.

Is lying necessary? Of course not. To someone who lives where the power of popularity does him little good, lies are far more likely to be a detriment than benefit (though lieing to yourself can sometimes be a good way to get yourself to do things you otherwise wouldn't). Likewise, when someone knows ONLY lies and no truth, it is only random chance that can provide them with what they need to survive. Truth is universally useful, lies much less so.

So yes. I lie. And I don't even feel bad about it. I lie to those who are more persuaded by their inclinations than their reason. To reason with such people is a waste of my time and theirs. The lie I most frequently tell is one of omission - I do not provide them with information (usually about myself) that would cause them to behave in ways against my interests if they knew.

But to people who I trust to consider things fairly, I have no secrets. To me, lies and secrets are really more of an annoyance than they are generally worth (perhaps that's why I have few friends, really... I'm not very interested in manufacturing realities that would keep others interested). I maintain a fiction with many people, but I would be happier if it were not necessary.

But - for now - it is.

Sometimes a smile is a lie, sometimes responding, "good" when ask how you are today is a lie. So I guess yes, I lie, but now I am going to try and stop this. I think even the small lies can corrupt. I will work on being silent when I do not want to lie, but then again sometimes silence is a lie, now I am just totally convinced I am screwed, thanks.

To lie or not to lie are the options available in given circumstances.......one weighs the consequences and chooses the more acceptable while deciding on the options.

For a few people the seemingly dire consequences arising out of not lying are more acceptable than the feeling of guilt that would remain with them for ever in case they lied.

Do I lie?

I'm human. I lie. I have lied, I probably will continue to lie. Do I like lying? Can I help myself?

Now that is the ultimate questions.

Can we survive without lying?

Can you?

No, I don't. Ooops, there I go...I did it again! Anyone who says they don't is most likely lying themselves. Usually, as some of your responders indicate, we tell untruths to spare another's feelings. "Does this make me look fat?" "Do you like this haircut?" Questions like that fairly cry out for either brutal honesty or compassionate feeling-sparing. Is that "lying?" Well, technically, yes. And yes, one COULD survive without lying, but one wonders how many friends you'd have left.

Finally, with all due respect to paytait and others, NOT saying anything CAN be lying. You see, there are lies of COmission, where you state something you know not to be true, and lies of Omission, where you neglect to say something the absence of which materially affects the total honesty of your answer.

Hope this helps.

"Even untruth might attain the value of truth,
It it is productive of unmixed good, without the least blemish."
By Valluvar.Until we know what exactly the meaning for truth and lie,we can not question about the survival.

In order to be "honest" and "truthful" to the need of the situation (taking care to ensure that even 'we' are not above the situation, meaning, our benefit, vested interest, gain, ego-satisfaction, need fulfilment etc does not take a priority), we can keep uttering untruth all day long and yet remain honest(untouched by the 'sin' or whatever of this act) !

Yes I do and I can survive without lying because I am human, all I need to survive is entertainment, food, water, exercise, sleep, and a bathroom.
