There is not enough information to answer your question adequately.

Let's say here in New Hampshire, where I live, a person receives 2-7 year sentence. We do not have early release on good behavior here. This would mean a person has to serve 2 years minimum in prison.

After 2 years in prison they would go up for review to the parole board. If they are eligible for parole, they would do the remaining of their sentence on parole. If were to happen something happens while on parole and they violated their parole, the person would go back to prison to finish up the remaining time they have of their "2-7 years" that they have left.

However, if a person here was sentenced for 7 years (not 2-7), they would do the FULL 7 years in prison. (this is an example)

In Alabama, I don't know if it is like this everywhere, if it is a straight 6 years then the person will probably go up for parole 2-3 years and get it as long as the person has had "good behavior." When serving a straight sentence you do 2 for 1. If it is a split sentence then the person will spend 6 years day for day.

I depends...some crimes allow for parole and others do not.

It depends on what structure the legislature set up and what the judge decides within that structure.

It can be anywhere from a year in prison and 5 years probation or a full 6 years in prison.

In Wisconsin there are news laws concerning "truth in sentencing laws". Meaning 6 years means 6 years. Not sure if this is nationwide law or just in my state.
