i thought i had it bad because i don't have a cell phone and internet access at our house. but there's this guy in the adolescent section who's mom doesn't want him and wants to kill his little sibling. or teen moms who get judged even though they were sexually abused. it makes me realize has lucky i really am.

That's a great story and a great lesson.

One of the most insidious feelings a person can have is self-pity. "Poor me, I have a horrible life!" Instead, we should get tough and deal with adversity, then use it to learn from it. Self-pity keeps us from being healthy, happy, effective human beings. It keeps us from seeing the upside in our situation. It keeps us from solving our problems and creating opportunities.

I love the phrase, "It could always suck worse." Like you, one can appreciate this by seeing the plights of others. Other people reflect on adversity they may have had earlier in life.

When I lived in Virginia I had a next door neighbor who couldn't breath without oxygen tubes up her nose, and she went everywhere in a powered chair. She coughed incessantly. But she was always cheerful. She smiled and greeted me, was always going somewhere to have a good time. Amazing.

A better thought..."This isn't so bad. I can handle this."

Yes, there is always someone who has it worse than you do. It's funny to me that you thought you had a bad life because of not having a cell phone or internet. My wife and I lived with no tv, no phone at all, no computer, no health insurance and are both disabled due to failed back surgeries and we both live in chronic pain 24/7. We finally got disability benefits so we have a phone now and my Dad gave us a computer since we can't get out and about much. Life is difficult, but when you have your health, trust me you are truly blessed. I'm glad that reading about other peoples lives has helped you to realize how very fortunate you are. Cell phones and internet service are material things that everyone can live without, they are luxuries. Be thankful that you have a home and a family that loves you. If you are healthy and not in pain, thank God for your health. Take care and be happy.

yep. its really good when people have those sort of epiphanies, so they realize they should value what theyve got instead of complain about what they havent got. I often dislike my psysical features, like my legs for example, but i remembered reading somewhere about a story about a girl who was swimming at the beach who got her legs bitten off by a shark....I thought....at least ive got legs!
