I think it's depend on wining the 2007 world cup and I have no idea who is gonna win this. Whoever wins the cup he will be the best captain in the world. if u ask who is the best then I have to say Arjuna Ranatunga from Sri Lanka is the best captain in the world. I seen entire world cup series in 1996. It was amazing he know how to reach the target and wining the game. He always cool with entire team. He never get upset loosing the game but he prepared for the next game to defeat. absolutely hes amazing and well talented, and he bought the 1996 world cup to Sri Lanka. Isn't it amazing ? I have seen many captains but so far no one is close to him. I don't know how many people watch this 1996 world cup series, if u watched u know what I'm saying.(before 1996, Sri Lanka is one of the worst cricket team in the world)

the thing in cricket is if you have gud players your team will win you dont need a very gud captain, like in australia,i dont think ponting is a very good captain but since there players are good they keep winning.if he's such a gud captain with a very gud team he will not lose to newzealand after scoring over 300.ponting simply didnt know wat to do.he didnt make anything happen.
fleming in the other hand is a great captain,he makes sumthing happen in the field eventhough he dosent have a great team compared to aus.
mahela jayawardena is also like fleming, these are the real captains.its gud you can lead by example but its not necessary.if so everytime best player should be the captain.captain is a leader he should lead the team to victory, they r not there set examples.

It is hard to show which captain is the best. It all comes under leadership qualities. It is not only about which team plays the best and therefore he is the best captain, it is all about how he handles the team in tough situations and keeping himself calm. E.g. Former Sri lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga.
I don't consider ponting as the best captain. We all know he is good batsmen but i think he is very lucky to have very good players in his team. For me its Stephen Fleming. He does not have a perfect team but he is very good in battling. He is cool and calm and With his experience he becomes my number 1.
P.S - I'm not a New Zealander

There are many good captains in this world cup but they have very good teams so its not difficult for them to captain such a talented and strong side. I think Stephen Flemming of New Zealand has always been a good captain and leading his side very well in this tournament. Second is Mahela Jayawardene coz he is leading his side from the front. The way he played against West Indians is a lesson for those who aspire to lead their sides.

Captains that lead by example on the field and make good choices and tactics...
Ponting....has influneced the game with the bat more than Fleming of any other captain. Has lead on the field with plenty of catches and assisted Run outs unlike other captains (fleming who stand in slips all day ;) )
Ponting has been spot on with his change of bowling and toss of the coin choices...though Fleming has been good as well.
