It's random, arbitrary, unexplained and unimportant.
Just like the points and people's maniacal obsession over them, this is just another way to make adults behave badly.

The more you answer in a particular category, and the more Best Answers you get (not the percentage) the more likely you are to get a "top contributor" badge next to your name, in up to 3 categories, and is updated weekly. Levels, points, and best answer percentage have nothing to do with it and there are no officially stated minimums needed. I have it for answering in Yahoo 360, Yahoo Answers, and the General - Yahoo! Products categories, none of which am I on the leaderboard, but I have been answering alot of questions in these categories recently. I do lead the category DIY and I do not have "top contributor" for that category, but I haven't answered much in that one for a while.
It's also a brand new feature and they are still working out the exact formula (which they refuse to disclose) to recognize quality over quantity.
Here's the link to the blog entry from the A-Team explaining, in a little more detail, "Top Contributors".

Nobody really knows what the standards are. (For instance, I was able to quickly find a person has fewer points than you---Level 6---fewer Best Answers, and a lower Best Answer percentage, but she's a "Top Contributor" while you aren't---go figure)
These orange bars just showed up one day, everyone made a big deal over it for about five minutes, and now most people really don't care.

From what I understand...You have to be in the top 10% of best answers to get there. I'm not sure. I'm seem to teter on the edge of being one and not being one.

lt was given to us weeks ago and then abruptly confiscated. When we thought that's the end of it **whoala**, it's back again.
ln other words, we are also confused as to what makes it appear.

get a percentage of best answers in a catagory but its easy to lose if you answer alot of questions and dont get best answers then your % goes down and you lose it... â¥
