How about filing a police complaint? The courts are higher than he is......
Make sure you have copies of everything at home. Becuase He won't be your boss. If you quit you may be able to get unemployment due to a HOSTILE atmosphere- how about EEOC to file a complaint?

What you're contemplating will have you, and I assume some fellow co-workers, embroiled in a messy web of what I call "workplace political dynamics"; if I had faced your situation, I'd do this:
Quietly gather up ALL the hard copy written EVIDENCE the boss has written, and move it OUT of the workplace and hide it somewhere safe. You don't want the boss "accidentally" shredding the evidence.
Next, phone your local EEOC office and file an official complaint, noting you have copies of actual hand written evidence the boss has written and signed that may well be of interest.
Also, meet with an attorney--advising him / her you've notified the EEOC, requesting they investigate the boss. I'd hand the attorney the hard copy evidence and follow their advice.
What follows likely will be the boss gets contacted by the EEOC and/or your attorney--and he'll be hellfire hot n' angry, too. He'll likely harrass and intimidate you and the others--DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB!!! Quitting will WEAKEN your case against this slug. But do bear in mind the boss DOES HAVE RIGHTS and can fire you if mistakes are made. The less spoken to the boss, all the better.
Oh....and do treat the new hire or "temp" worker well; could be they need the work.......also could be they're a Federal EEOC agent sent out to investigate a case.....you just never know, now do you?

File a report with the your states department of labor. I would suggest you start looking for a new job though, the labor department will investigate if his behavior warrants legal action.

If he hit you, I'd say walk down to your nearest police department and charge him with assault and battery.
