How do you upload a DVD (like a movie you buy at the store) onto your computer?

You need ripping software. I have a perfect combinatoin for you. First download AnyDVD as this removes dvd copyright and then get DVDShrink as these rips it from disc to harddrive and leaves it in a format that can be burnt to disc or converted for editing.

You use a DVD ripping program.
The files will be split into anywhere from 1-10 .vob files into the folder you save it in depending on the ripping program.
You can usually play the .vob files with media player as long as you have the DVD codec.

Hi. You'll need a DVD decoding program. DVDdecrypter works but does not allow you to copy to another DVD. This may keep you out of trouble!
