54 mbps is the speed of your wireless connection the speed of your broadband line is unlikely to be much faster than 8 meg in the uk (unless you have some ninja cable line or something) so therefore the bottleneck of your download speeds will come from your broadband line, not your wireless router and adapter.
Currently, until 802.11n is ratified as a standard, 108 mbps is about the fastest you can have with a wireless router and even then you'd have to get a new wireless adapter for your pc.
The only way to have a 1gbps (1024 mbps) connection to your router is by ethernet cable (assuming you have a gigabit ethernet adaptor)

No, If you are talking in terms of wireless, it is going to be long time till high-speed internet runs at 54 Mbps. The 1GB cards are
just there for people with money who think they are getting
faster internet, even though there are not.

I think you are confusing the speed of your router or wireless router with your broadband internet speed
Seeing as your internet from your providor would be usually up to around 8 MBps, upgrading your router would not make any difference as you router speed far exceeds the speed of your connection. Upgrading your router, would however, speed up file sharing between 2 computers and printing if you run a network.

Hi. I would run the "Full tests" at PCPitstop. This will give you tips on what can improve your download speed. Never heard af an ISP that offered 1GB.
