My new born is very gassy lately and has had more then a couple of diaper explosions, (A) Should I be worried? (B) should I switch her from regular to decaf, i mean soy formula? My wife is breast feeding while subing some formula in at night, since we heard it stays in the baby longer......What would you do?

Her being gassy and having explosions is nothing to worry about at all! Just give her gas drops now and then so that her tummy doesn't hurt.

As for the formula......I would say to keep her on regular. She doesn't really have a reason (you didn't tell me she was crying in pain from eruptions) Keep the regular and switch her to decaf only when your pediatrician advises you to do so. Good luck with those explosive diapers..........and don't forget the butt cream.

It's pretty normal for newborns But if in a couple months the baby doesn't stop having bad diaper or throwing up it's something you need to talk to a doctor about. My son was throwing up all the time and it was from milk based formula. He is on a Soy drink now. He also has sever reflux.

Wean from the supplements altogether.

If your wife needs more sleep, have the baby lay in bed with you and she can nurse while laying down (or you can get up, get baby and bring back to bed for mom to nurse and then put baby back to bed... but thats alot more work!

Formula is really hard for alot of babies to digest... thats why they can go longer at night between feedings. So, basically... the gas and "explostions" are simply a by-product of the result that you were trying to attain.

It is, seriously, so much better for the baby to be exclusivly breastfed for at least 6 months. Introducing anything other than breastmilk can cause absorption issues with certain nurients (iron comes immedietly to mind) and can mess with the 'gut flora' that is being created on a diet of just breastmilk (gut flora being the good bacteria that help us to digest food properly).

If she wants more sleep, look into co-sleeping (and safe co-sleeping)... other than that, its just very normal for an infant to wake frequently... Theyre supposed to wake alot, it keeps them safe from going into too deep a sleep and never waking up (i.e. SIDS).

Babies typically know what they need... if yours needs to wake alot, theres probably a good reason for it, know what i mean?

Ive left some links for you to check out....

Best wishes!

Is your baby just gassy? Or is the baby spitting up too. Soy is for lactos baby well usually and if the baby is not spitting up the best thing is to call the babies dr and tell the dr what is going on and see what the dr thinks. With my son i used enfamil AR he could never drink a bottle with out spitting up and having really back colics. I called my dr and she changed it to that one. I hope this helped you...

It isn't a bad idea, but soy formulas don't always work either. Try to be patient. It will probably get better. Most babies are gassy.

you shouldnt HAVE to supplement with soy, just try Mylicon drops, that helped my daughter a lot when she was gassy and if they dont work then try switching.... as for the blow outs.. well thats what happens when you give babies formula of any type, they poop alot more and its harder for them to pass, if s/he's younger than a month its too soon to tell, but if s/he's older then it might be the formula.. talk to the doctor and he should be able to ease your mind

Definietly go wth soy, some babies are lactose intolerant and thats what causes all the gas, plus you should ask the ped. for advice. I breastfeed right now but I sometimes give my baby formula during the day. Breastfeeding at night really works for me. Depending on your babies age you can try to cut the night times feedings down, some babies want to feed for comfort. good luck

At this point it is more of a trial and error type thing. Try it and see if it helps. :)
