America is a Republic. In the Pledge of Allegiance it even says "AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS" because America is a Republic.
The form of Government, however, is Democratic... of the people, by the people and for the people... just like it says in the Constitution.
In a true REPUBLIC, these special interest groups and minorities could not control the majority of the people.

Read Aristotle, Nicomachaen Ethics, Politic.
The United States is neither a democracy or a republic by definition. It is a mixed government. It utilizes forms of an oligarchy, a monarchy, indirect democracy, republicanism, constitutionalism, and many other political theories. Most Americans think they live in a "Democratic Republic" - that statement makes no sense.
Also, if you believe in the iron law of oligarchy, every government, regardless of it intended inception, eventually becomes an oligarchy (rule by the few).
By virtue of a democracy, a democracy cannot be a republic and by virtue of a republic, a republic cannot be a democracy.
It's like 'reverse discrimination' - a commonly used term that in essence makes absolutely no sense.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin, it is 'a Republic, if you can keep it'.
Obviously, you have so distorted the meanings of the words that you are incapable of keeping it. The simplest form of democracy is demonstrated with two men and a woman on an island. One man moves that the woman shoud be raped. The other man seconds the motion. The woman votes against the motion, but is outvoted. She gets raped.
Democracy is simply majority rule. It has nothing to do with fairness or freedom. Republics protect the rights of the minority by giving them an equal voice under the law. Too bad you can't comprehend this. Spend less time listening to the jingoism of those who would lead you over the cliff of intolerance and ignorance.

United States of America is a Democratic Republic. Meaning that you elect your representatives to govern on your behalf.
You elect congressman/senator and they in turn go and vote on what government does.
Look buddy I admit Republicans have messed up but the Democrats have done NO better. Our country is screwed just as much due to the Dems and the GOP

we are a republic right now.. dude your not very bright are you. a Republic bases their views on values. where a democracy bases their views on rights. even if that right doesn't have very high vallues take abortion. but since it should be your right to choose democrats are for it.. republicans on the other hand do not support abortion because it's wrong even if it takes away our right to choose.
The constitution prevents either republicans our democracy to take away the rights that give us our freedom.
Your just one of those people that don't know what they are talking about and heard someone else make a comment and decided that is how you think lol. your a follower. LOSER be a leader

It is a Republic...But you're right that Neocons use that term so they don't have to adhere to Democratic Principals. Using the term Republic gives them the opportunity to dismantle the Constitution. So you're on the right track! Keep supporting free speech and open questions and dialogue whether you agree or not!

Some people love to cite the passage in the Pledge of Allegiance that says "to the Republic for which it stands."
Little do they know that the author of the Pledge, Bellamy, was a self-professed socialist. Look it up.

You need to calm down! The proper term for this country at present is an oligarchy, a country ruled by the wealthy. Until we get a fair system of campaign contributions it will remain the same.

Right on i think you already answered your own question.
The US is becoming less and less of a democracy i mean if some one can become president without wining the vote and do it twice then obviously it is no longer a true democracy, but about half of our country is full of idiots who either don’t care or have a clue. and the people who can do something about it, the (rich) usually only care about their selves
