Carrots need a light soil, not heavy clay. Otherwise the carrot will become deformed when it hits rocks or hard soil below.

Sowing is a bit tricky as the seed is so fine. I make a very shallow ditch with my finger, mix the seed with some dirt so I don't end up with 20 seeds in one spot, and then sprinkle it into the ditch and cover with a little soil, press down to "set."

Water with a light impact sprinkler, heavy droplets can dislodge the seed. Keep the bed moist, not soggy. Once the seeds are up about an inch, you need to thin them. I don't pull out the extras, instead I pinch off their leaves. This doesn't disturb the roots of nearby plants.

Hopefully you care not getting carrot maggots in the soil thus having the carrots eaten underneath. Some type of pesticide might be needed if these critters are a problem.

Keep the soil evenly moist. Drought then wet tends to make a lousy carrot. I often mulch with dry grass clippings or straw to keep the soil from drying too much between irrigations.

If your soil is clay or heavy, grow the shorter stubby varieties. Long narrow carrots are best grown in sandy soil.

Carrots need a soft soil to grow in. Clay will not let them grow. I have added sand to hard soil for growing them. Follow the directions on the package for planting. If I remember correctly, it is 1/2" deep in rows. Plant a couple inches apart and thin out the plants when they get a few inches tall. I watered mine once a week. Depends on your local rainfall. Just remember that they grow down so keep the loose dirt deeper than what the length of the carrots are supposed to grow to.
