Hi Tony,
The hissing sound is a warning to back off. Your cat, being a street cat for a while, has learned to use this sound to back off animals that may hurt it. It can also growl. You didn't say what the approximate age of the cat is. If it is friendly to all, and is an older cat, you might want to put a free "found" ad in the papers, because it was probably someones pet. The fact that the cat hasn't jumped on the dog and started fighting is good. They may learn to play eventually, but it will take time. Also, I don't know if this will work or not, but you might try association therapy. Keep small treats that the cat likes. When the dog makes an advancement, and the cat hisses, put a cat treat down and remove the dog. Placing your hand on the cat's head, middle two fingers between the ears, palm over the eyes, your other hand holding it's body, shows the cat that you are the dominant animal in the household. Many times you will see cat's at play, one will suddenly put it's paw on the others head. Most of the time the other one will get away, but it understands that it was a dominant play. Hope this helps and bless you for taking an animal off the streets.

Cats and dogs have different styles of playing, so the cat will be uneasy at first, but they will get each other trained after a while. It sounds like neither of them is too aggressive to live together. Since the dog is so much bigger, the cat just wants to make sure it is safe and won't be bullied. They will be good friends after a while.

The best thing is to let the animals work it out themselves. They both have to learn to get along with each other but there is no way you can force them to like each other. As long as they aren't trying to kill each other leave them alone.
P.S. the cat is only hissing at the cat which the dogs knows to be a sign of aggression, you should consider your self lucky that the dog doesn't try to fight back.

Hey, your dog sounds like mine. In that case the answer is simple, Pay equal attention to both. HA! Makes it sound easy doesn't it? But if your cat starts acting up around your dog, grab its face. You may be bitten or scratched, but it always works for me.
